Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, alleging that the company distorted the effectiveness of its Covid-19 vaccine.

The lawsuit follows a six-month investigation by Paxton into alleged gain-of-function research conducted by Pfizer with Covid-19 vaccine developers Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, reports Al-Rai daily.

Paxton said in a statement: “Pfizer engaged in false, deceptive, and misleading actions and practices by making unsupported claims regarding the company’s (Covid-19) vaccine, in violation of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act,” considering that the company made illegal profits in billions of dollars.

Paxton specifically challenged Pfizer’s claim that its vaccine was 95 percent effective against the new corona virus, arguing that this was a statistical trick called “relative risk reduction,” which the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acknowledged could mislead consumers by presenting the treatment as more effective than it is, according to what was reported by “Russia Today”.

The lawsuit said that clinical trial data showed that the dose actually reduced the probability of contracting “Covid-19” by only 0.85 percent.

According to the complaint, the epidemic “got worse” after the majority of Americans were vaccinated against the disease, noting that “official government reports showed that in at least some places, the percentage of those vaccinated who died from (Covid-19) was greater than those who did not.”

The lawsuit also alleges that Pfizer intentionally made false and unsupported claims about the vaccine’s performance against variants, including the Delta variant, while calling its critics “criminals” and accusing them of spreading “misinformation.”

Paxton is seeking to impose financial sanctions and issue an injunction preventing Pfizer from continuing to “misrepresent” the effectiveness of its product.

In a statement to the media, a Pfizer spokesperson said that the company “is deeply committed to the well-being of the patients it serves and has no higher priority than the safety and effectiveness of its treatments and vaccines.”
