The National Assembly approved during Tuesday’s extraordinary session a bill for electing members of the elections supreme general commission, with 59 MPs voting in favor and three against out of the 62 present legislators.

A report issued by the joint committee stipulated establishment of the commission for overseeing and organizing the elections, in coordination with government and non-government entities, and that it would be part of the justice minister’s jurisdictions.

The commission is tasked with preparing electoral lists, receiving and examining nominations, setting rules for electoral campaigns, funding and specifying time in the media for the campaigners.

It will supervise the elections and specify venues of electoral stations, examine adherence to electoral rules, transparency, neutrality and integrity.

The commission is empowered to present recommendations regarding problems that may take place during the electoral process, receive complaints from voters, nominees and involved organizations and notify the public prosecution in supected crime cases.

Moreover, it is in charge of declaring the final and detailed results of the elections, preparing the final report about the polls including proposals to overhaul the process. The report should be submitted to the parliament speaker, the minister of justice and the head of the supreme judicial council. Furthermore, it sets regulations and issues permits for conducting public opinion polls. – KUNA
