Municipal Council member, Engineer Farah Al-Roumi, suggested allocating a site for the construction of new grain silos in the port of the southern part of the country, according to an Arab daily. The proposed project will serve as an addition to the existing silos in Shuwaikh port.
Al-Roumi explained in her proposal that establishing the new silos aims to secure a strategic reserve of basic foodstuffs and grains for up to a year, as well as to ensure the country’s food security and sustainability in various circumstances and changes. In addition, she stressed the need for coordination with the concerned authorities to take necessary action on the matter.
According to Al-Roumi, population growth is a current global concern. Therefore, achieving food security is one of the challenges facing the world. Apart from population explosion, other factors that are threatening food security include climate change and environmental pollution. She said these factors have affected all countries across the globe, and Kuwait is far from isolated from their impact, hence, achieving food security is a call for national demand.
