Municipal Council member, Abdullatif Al-Daei, has proposed the regulation of pedestrian lanes on roads and sidewalks within the municipality, in line with urban concepts and to ensure the safety of pedestrians on the sidewalks of back roads and main roads, as well as guaranteeing the provision of requirements to adapt to Kuwait’s urban development, such as providing appropriate shading and road services, including furniture, waste cans, and things that require greening.

Al-Daei called for classifying the types of sidewalks based on their location and functions, such as internal road pavement, main road pavement, and commercial area pavement, among others, as well as presenting specifications and technical requirements based on these classifications.

The proposal stipulated:

  • Allocating spaces for the reversal of buildings, pedestrian crossing and public furnishing areas.
  • Ensuring its use for all demographics, especially those with special needs.
  • Designating signs for pedestrians, especially at intersections.
  • The mechanism of linking the sidewalks to each other, and crossing at the signals to be convenient and safe.
  • Organizing bus stations and government road works, such as electricity transformers.
  • Improving the visual landscape by planting sidewalks and shading pedestrian and cyclist paths.
  • Furnishing the specifications of furniture on the sidewalks, plant basins and night lighting.
