Since its launch in 2010, Instagram has made its name by allowing users to upload photos with short captions. Now, with a new tool called Notes, users can share posts with emojis, up to 60 characters of text, and no images at all.

Notes gives Instagram users the option to post short notes to followers they follow or to someone on their close friends list, reports Al-Rai daily. The tool has already been launched in other countries including the US and Australia, where users have compared it to MSN Messenger.

Notes has finally launched in the UK and Europe after its first launch in December. Meta describes the Notes feature as “a new way to share ideas and see what friends are up to.”

“During our initial testing, we knew that people like having an easy way to share what’s on their minds and start conversations,” the message says. From asking for recommendations to sharing what they’re planning, Notes give people a spontaneous way to express themselves and connect with each other.

On Instagram, notes appear above direct messages (DMs), which can be accessed by tapping the kite icon in the top-right corner of the app.

To create a note, tap the plus button and enter up to 60 characters where it says “Share what’s on your mind.” You then have two options for who to send a note to, followers who follow you back or friends. People who receive your feedback can reply with a message that will appear in your direct messages.

And just like stories on Instagram, notes are ephemeral and disappear 24 hours after they’re posted.

According to Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, Notes is like a “status update” and useful for getting recommendations from a select group of people.

For example, if you are traveling to a country, you can ask friends who live in that country for recommendations on attractive places to visit or places to eat.
