The British School of Kuwait (BSK) in Salwa held a magnificent National Day celebration on 18 February.  The school was transformed into an Old Kuwaiti Souk–with a myriad of stalls to represent what Kuwait looked like in the old days.  The event was attended by hundreds of parents and they were welcomed into the Marble Arch arena of BSK with the traditional rose water and oud and were encouraged to join in the activities with flags and traditional foods – including, tea, coffee, dates and sweets.

BSK’s students and teachers all dressed in National costumes and participated in a wonderful parade, waving Kuwait flags to the echoes of traditional Kuwaiti music and the sound of cheering and clapping from parents, Madam Vera Al Mutawa (the Founder and Director of BSK) and many VIP guests. The atmosphere was on of happiness and laughter and the children were clearly having fun.

The BSK Scouts presented a flag ceremony before everyone stood for the Kuwait National anthem. The parents and staff were then treated to a wonderful program of performances by the British School of Kuwait students. Year 3 students performed to “Ishqena Alaard and Year 5 to “Ima Al-Kuwait wa Ila fa la” and there was a moving recital of the poem “We are staying here” by Ghalyah Alkhaledi (Year 5). All guests were then invited to explore the Heritage souk, which included a school and wedding area and a diwaniya.

After the event, the children and their parents were invited to enjoy coffee, eat dates and other Arabic delicacies including fresh Qaimaat, Rigag and Nakhi W Bajila.
