Members on the Municipal Council Munira Al-Amir, Alia Al-Farsi, Sharifa Al-Shalfan, Ismail Behbehani, Eng Abdullatif Al-Daei, and Fahd Al-Abdul-Jader said, in a proposal they submitted to the President of the Municipal Council, Abdullah Al-Muhri, that the phenomenon of stray dogs in residential areas is posing a threat to citizens saying there are about 20,000 stray dogs.
They warned the Animal Health Department of the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources that the most dangerous diseases that are transmitted from dogs to humans are rabies calling the treatment ‘very difficult’ and “we have noticed recently a large number of accidents because of the negligence of the concerned authorities, reports Al-Qabas daily.
They added, there was a time when the stray dogs roamed only the abandoned areas but now they are found in areas inhabited by people, stressing that caring for these animals is one of the things that our religion calls for which also a part of our civilized life.
The members suggested allocating sites to shelter stray dogs in the agricultural areas of Wafra, Abdali, Kabd and Sulaibiya, with appropriate areas according to the numbers of these animals, in coordination with the concerned authorities and the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fisheries to limit the spread of this phenomenon by providing appropriate vaccines to tame stray dogs until safe places are provided for them.
