The Blood Transfusion Services Department at the Ministry of Health announced the opening of a laboratory at the Sheikha Salwa Al-Sabah Stem Cell and Umbilical Cord Center, as part of an expansion plan to provide the best health services to patients, and to facilitate the exchange of blood and blood products for the Al-Sabah and Jahra health areas.

Director of the Department, Dr. Reem Al-Radwan, told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Thursday, that this step is the first of its kind, as a laboratory is being developed to store blood and its derivatives as a support of the Central Blood Bank.

Al-Radwan added the laboratory is equipped with the latest medical equipment of international standards to preserve blood and its derivatives. He explained the aim of opening the laboratory is to facilitate the process of exchange of blood and its derivatives for hospitals in Al-Sabah Health and Jahra areas.

The sources stated that the equivalent of 60,000 units of blood and its derivatives was supplied in 2021 to these hospitals, and this constitutes 50 percent of the annual consumption of blood and its derivatives.

The sources said the ministry hopes this step will be positive, and that this improvement and development will contribute to provide safe blood and its derivatives in a timely manner and meet the needs and requirements of all hospitals in the Sabah Health District and the Jahra District, especially during accidents and emergencies.
