While the law does not specify the number of cars that an expatriate can own, security sources said hundreds of expatriates own more than 50 cars each, Al-Rai reported.

It is known that they trade in cars since there is no ceiling on the number of cars an expatriate can register under his name.

They practice this trade of buying, selling, and leasing, without a license and this prompted the Directorate-General of Traffic Department to study the legality of this ownership and specify the number of cars an expatriate can register under his name.

The GTD sources told Al-Rai that “the survey carried out by the Traffic Department, as part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion on the roads, the authorities discovered hundreds of expatriates own dozens of cars and undoubtedly they trade in cars, albeit without a license taking advantage of the fact that there us no law to determine how many cars a person can own.

This led to chaos, in addition to hundreds of them circumventing the law by registering more than 50 vehicles in their names.

The GTD pointed out these expatriates trade-in cars away from the eyes of the Ministry of Commerce, and make huge profits but the state treasury does not benefit from this trade, because they trade without a license.

The sources stated that the General Traffic Department is seeking to eliminate chaos by issuing a decision that will put a limit on the vehicles each resident will be allowed to own.

This is in addition to collecting a sum of money if required, which will significantly limit the presence of dozens of vehicles on roads.

The sources said there are cases of residents who rent vehicles to their compatriots on monthly basis and the GTD is determined to put an end to all this illegal business.
