The cooperative societies boards of directors if proven to be lax in providing high-quality goods, or neglecting the method of preserving and displaying them in an appropriate manner within the markets of the cooperative societies and their branches will face problems.

A local Arabic daily learned based on a decision issued by the Minister of Social Affairs and Social Development, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development Mubarak Al-Aro six teams will be formed under the leadership of the Undersecretary of the Ministry, and the members will be the Assistant Undersecretary for Cooperatives Sector Affairs, representatives of the Ministry and relevant government agencies to support the food security system in the country.

According to the sources the ministry has formed teams, each comprising 6 inspectors, with two representatives from each of the Ministries of Commerce and Affairs and the Federation of Cooperative Societies, noting that a meeting of the team will be held this week to determine the date for the start of the inspection tours, stressing that tougher penalties are waiting for companies whose monopoly on goods is proven, by preventing them to supply goods to cooperative outlets if they are found manipulating prices, taking advantage of the current global crisis created by the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The sources stated that the penalties will also extend to the boards of directors whose inaction in providing high-quality goods is proven, or their neglect of the way they are preserved and presented in an appropriate manner within the central markets and cooperative branches, in order to address the problems of providing associations with goods and products in the necessary quantities and quality, indicating that there are periodic reports that will be submitted to all Three months for the Minister, including a summary of the team’s work and recommendations issued by it.

The sources added that “the team will discuss this week the development of a mechanism for supplying goods to associations, in order to achieve balance with supermarkets, in addition to the possibility of approving a rapid documentary cycle that facilitates the suppliers’ access to their financial dues on a timely basis without any significant delay.”

On another issue, the Department of Membership Affairs and Declaration of Cooperative Unions and Societies in the Ministry has begun setting dates for holding elections for cooperative boards of directors whose legal mandate has expired.

The sources revealed that the ministry has given priority to holding elections to associations whose membership has fallen out of most of its members, in order to avoid issuing appointment decisions within them to complete their quorum.

The sources added: “After the Fatwa and Legislation Department decided to hold the elections for the cooperative societies’ boards of directors, whose legal mandate has expired on all the nine seats in the council, the ministry will amend the election schedule in accordance with the (fatwa) response, by preventing priority being given to associations whose members have lost more than half.”
