Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, Dr. Jassim Al-Ustad, was quoted as saying the Ministry is looking forward to a strategy to boost power generation by 4,780 megawatts by 2028, saying the plan involves the execution of various projects under the Ministry’s purview.
He was responding to a query by MP Hamad Al-Obaid about rumors concerning a potential halt to a significant power plant initiative in Kuwait, the Ministry’s measures to address an imminent electricity shortage crisis, and why certain initiatives were seemingly overlooked by the ministry, reports Al-Rai daily.
Al-Ustad emphasized on the Ministry’s commitment to increasing electrical energy through multiple projects, four of which are under direct Ministry control. These include converting the second phase of the gas turbines at the Subbiya station into a 250-megawatt combined cycle system, bolstering the Subbiya electrical power and water distillation station’s output by 900 megawatts through gas turbine units operating on a combined cycle system, deploying photovoltaic panels on Subbiya underground water tanks to generate 30 megawatts, and establishing gas turbine units on a combined cycle system of 3,600 MW at the Nuwaiseeb site, marking the first phase.
Furthermore, he highlighted collaborative ventures between the Ministry and the Public-Private Partnership Authority aimed at generating 7,200 megawatts of electrical energy by 2029. These projects encompass expansions in Al-Zour North Station (second and third phases), Al-Khairan Station (first phase), and Al-Shagaya Station (second, fourth phases with PV solar panels), as well as the third and fifth stages with CSP and PV solar panels, respectively.
On the issue of rumors Al-Ustad clarified that the Ministry lacked specific details about the purported initiative, but stressed on the Ministry’s open-mindedness towards all initiatives, reiterating the Ministry’s commitment to thoroughly assess such proposals from both technical and legal points of view within appropriate frameworks.
