The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said the 18,000 megawatts of power production is able to cover the consumption rate of next summer, which is expected not to exceed 17,000 megawatts maximum.

The Electrical Insecurity Department, therefore, is seeking to sign an agreement with the Gulf electrical interconnection system to import between 500 and 1,000 megawatts, in anticipation of any emergency that occurs in the electricity generation network, reports Al-Rai daily.

The sources indicated that the maximum consumption rate recorded last summer was on August 9, 2022, was 16180 megawatts, and said “the rate of consumption increases annually by 3 to 8 percent, as a result of urban expansion and the operation of some new projects.”

The sources added, “The ministry can bypass next summer after using the Gulf interconnection system, but it will face a real dilemma in the summer during 2024 and 2025, due to the absence of electrical projects that will enter the network during the next two years, with the exception of a project to supply, install and operate gas turbines at the Subbiya power station to produce 900 megawatts in two phases.”

On the same level, MP Alia Al-Khaled warned that Kuwait will suffer next summer from a severe electricity crisis that will extend during 2024 and 2025 due to the decision of the Planning Committee in the Ministry of Electricity, saying that “the solution using the Gulf interconnection is a patchwork and temporary solution that will not solve the problem permanently”.
