Russian authorities said on Tuesday they had arrested a man in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on suspicion of imprisoning a woman for 14 years and killing another woman.

Russian media published pictures of the 51-year-old man. The alleged crimes were revealed after the man’s mother requested medical assistance for him due to his mental condition. This helped the kidnapped woman, 33, to escape, reports Al-Rai daily.

According to a statement from the investigators, the man had invited the woman, who was 19 years old at the time, to his home and then refused to allow her to leave. It was reported that he beat and raped her.

Media reports said the man had installed bars on the windows and had always locked the house.

When his mother called an ambulance, the man forgot to lock the house, according to a report published by the Izvestia newspaper and posted on the investigators’ website. The woman managed to escape and found her sister.

When the police arrived at the house, they found the remains of another woman who had been stabbed, dismembered and then buried in a plot of the man’s home in 2011.

A media report said the man was taken to hospital for observation. A search of the house yielded two computers, as well as chains and restraints.

The man’s mother was also arrested on the grounds that while she was certainly aware of her son’s activities, she insisted that the woman was living with her son of her own free will.

The man faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
