In a world that faces the challenges of poverty, conflict, famine, natural calamities and oppression, Kuwait stood apart as a compassionate nation under the sagacious leadership of His Highness the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah.

The late Amir’s strong belief in peace and friendship and his commitment to helping people around the world has allowed the country to play a massive role in providing development assistance to an increasing number of developing countries, irrespective of geography, form of government or religious beliefs. In the service of humanity, Kuwait and its leadership are a splendid example of a country’s concern and dedication to alleviate the plight of the unfortunate throughout the world.

Kuwait, under the leadership of the late Amir prioritized economic and human development of its people by creating a safe environment, providing job opportunities and offering the best for a ‘cradle to grave’ welfare society.  At the same time, the country has been at the forefront of supporting global initiatives designed for the economic development of less fortunate nations.

As a firm believer in the important role of the United Nations in confronting challenges facing peace, security and social justice around the world, the late Amir of Kuwait had said: “I would like to renew the commitment of  Kuwait — which has always been a firm and genuine supporter and an effective member of the United Nations, is still of the same conviction and shall remain so, out of its belief in the noble message of the United Nations – in the preservation of international peace and security, the dissemination of the principles of justice and equality and ensuring a life of dignity and welfare to the people of the world”.

The late Amir of Kuwait’s first speech at the United Nations expressed full awareness of the role played by the international organization. He stated: “Kuwait’s participation in international activities clearly indicates that Kuwait’s independence and membership of the UN are not an end by themselves, but are rather a means by which Kuwait can share responsibility in improving the lives of the people in our country and in other countries.”

The late Amir believed strongly in tolerance, diversity and the necessity of cultural integration, not cultural conflict. Despite the challenges he had faced, the late Amir proved time and time again his immense ability in the twin fields of Kuwait’s domestic and foreign affairs.

The late Amir had dedicated himself to Kuwait and its people.  However, he never lost sight of the needs of humanity in crises around the world.  He has generously donated to countries affected by the ravages of war, floods, earthquakes and other natural calamities without discriminating among nations because of their form of governments, beliefs or religion.

He believed that the youth are the real wealth of any nation. His vision was to transform Kuwait into a centre of hard work and innovation, a testament to progress and modernity. He believed in cooperation based on democratic dialogue and constructive criticism.

In August 2017, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed gratitude for Kuwait’s leadership in humanitarian action, as well as the “dialogue and promotion of understanding Kuwait has shown in relation to all conflicts in the region.” He added, “But it’s not only the humanitarian leadership of Kuwait, it’s the wisdom, the dialogue, the promotion of understanding that Kuwait has shown in relation to all conflicts in the region. Kuwait has no agenda. The agenda of Kuwait is peace; is understanding.” Mr. Guterres further noted the positive role played by the late Amir of Kuwait in the ongoing GCC crisis and recalled that when he was High Commissioner for Refugees (June 2005 to December 2015) the late Amir of Kuwait presided over the three conferences to mobilize the international community to support the Syrian people.

The late Amir was the main mediator in the current Gulf crisis involving Qatar. Speaking in Washington DC on 7 September 2017 at a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump, the late Amir said the threat of war between Qatar and the Arab nations boycotting it for the past three months had been neutralised. “What is important is that we have stopped any military action,” the late Amir emphasized.

If one were to take a cursory glance at the world today and objectively analyse the contribution of world leaders to humanity as a whole, whether in the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Far East, it would be difficult to find a single leader who has contributed so immensely to peace, development and the alleviation of poverty around the world other than the late Amir of Kuwait. His benevolence has engulfed not only the region but several other countries around the world.

No individual, anywhere in the world, be it presidents, prime ministers, monarchs or dictators, has been so dedicated to serving not only his own people, but humanity at large for such a long period, with the exception of the late Amir of Kuwait.

The late Amir worked tirelessly to build peace, friendship and fraternity among nations, and had been an indefatigable supporter of holding dialogue and discussions to bridge disputes and discords between countries.

The innumerable peace and humanitarian initiatives of the late Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah endeared him to the global community and made him a beacon of hope for the world.
