Lascar volcano, located 1,600 km from Santiago in northern Chile, recorded an increase in its volcanic activity, on Saturday, which led to an earthquake and the appearance of a column of smoke 6,000 meters high.

The authorities decided to raise the volcanic alert level near Laskar, from green to yellow, and imposed a five-kilometer security belt around the volcano.

The yellow color means that the volcano is experiencing unstable activity, with minor explosions recorded. There were no reports of injuries or damage to the infrastructure. But the village of Talaber, 30 kilometers from the volcano, has been put on alert for a possible evacuation.
