The head of the Kuwaiti Farmers Union, Abdullah Al-Damak, told Al-Rai that “the increase in the price of the cucumber carton from 200 fils to KD 1.10 sounded the alarm and revealed the suffering of the Kuwaiti farmers.

The rise in prices is the result of lack of labours, as agricultural reserves needs 30 workers to operate and supervise the harvesting activities. Now, not more than 5 to 8 workers are available today, which threatens a disaster that will harm the agricultural sector and the local production.

Al-Dammak called on the government to save the agricultural sector and the local product, and to move immediately by allowing workers to be brought in with visitor visas and quarantined on farms in accordance with health requirements, in order to preserve the local products and the stability of prices subject to the increase, especially in cucumber, potato, pepper, cabbage, broccoli, and leafy vegetables.
