In a positive environmental development, the air pollution rate in Kuwait’s regions witnessed a significant decline over the past week, according to data from the IQAir Index, which publishes daily updates on air quality levels in cities around the world.

Just one week ago, the index monitored that the level of pollution in the air of Kuwait City (the Capital) was 152 standard points, a high number that ranked it at the time within that index in the 13th place on the list of the worst in the world.

The good news, however, is that the figures monitored by Al-Rai yesterday showed that that level had fallen significantly to 88 points, and Capital occupied the 30th place in the world, a relatively better position than it was a week ago.

Air quality indicators also improved at the level of other regions of Kuwait, and this improvement led to a decrease in the general rate of air pollution in Kuwait to 80 points, after its average was 140 points over the past two weeks.

According to the latest forecasts yesterday, the levels in some areas of Kuwait were as follows: Hawally (91), Rabieh (100), Bayan (85), Sabah Al-Salem (71), Dasma (70), Rumaithiya (65).

With this improvement in the overall average, Kuwait’s air in general moved to the 41st place globally, moving from the “unhealthy” segment to the “moderate” segment, which includes countries where the level of air quality is acceptable, but it contains some micro pollutants that may harm the health of a number of people — limited to people who have certain sensitivities to these pollutants.

The countries that currently occupy the top 10 places in the world in terms of air pollution rates are: India (659 standard points), Mongolia, China, Bangladesh, Tajikistan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia.

As for the 10 worst polluted cities globally are Pakistan’s Lahore, Kyrgyzstan’s Bishkek, India’s Delhi, South Korea’s Incheon, India’s Calcutta, Bangladesh’s Dhaka, China’s Wuhan, China’s Shenyang, Bosnia’s Sarajevo and Pakistan’s Karachi.
