Kuwaiti scientists at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research joined their colleagues at the British Environment Center (CEFAS) to complete a new scientific project. In this regard the British Embassy said scientists will collect samples of seaweed from all over the coast of Kuwait, with the aim of storing blue carbon.

The Al-Qabas daily has learned that the research institute is currently preparing research plans to present them to the specialized committee for accreditation, and then announce the project soon. The project includes investigating the possibility of storing blue carbon, after extracting it from seaweed in the Arabian Gulf. During the past few days, samples were collected from several coastal sites.

The researchers aim to sequester and store carbon through coastal ecosystems, such as mangroves, seagrass trees, and salt marshes, to reduce the effects of climate change, as blue carbon contributes to reducing methane gas that is harmful to the environment.

And “blue carbon” is carbon that is self-absorbed and stored in coastal ecosystems, and works to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, to reduce climate change and adapt to it.
