Kuwaiti researchers have completed the first integrated and effective early warning system for viral epidemics — Covid 19 in particular — for effective monitoring, prevention and control, as part of the study conducted by the two principal investigators from the Medical Sciences Center at Kuwait University Dr. Salman Al-Sabah from the College of Medicine and Dr. Muhammad Al-Khamis from the College of Health with the assistance of researchers, Dr. Muhammad Khaja from the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, Noor Bin Haider from the College of Public Health, Dr. Ahmed Nabil and Dr. Suleiman Al Mazeedi from the Ministry of Health, Dr. Sarah Al-Youha from the College of Medicine and the Ministry of Health.

Al-Rai said with the research funded by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, the researchers were able to demonstrate the ability of the prototype system to identify and estimate the evolution of the Covid-19 epidemic, its community transmission, temporal and spatial clusters, geographical risk distribution, and associated risk factors, in addition to the rate of genetic mutations and evolutionary and geographical origins.

The early warning system is based on the modeling and prediction of the temporal, spatio- logical and evolutionary dynamics of the Covid-19 epidemic in Kuwait, through the use of modern epidemiological tools such as temporal and spatial mathematical models, artificial intelligence, and biological evolution models that provide new and deeper insights into the dynamics of emerging diseases such as COVID-19.

An initial early warning system that can be used in a sustainable and easy way, in depicting, analyzing, and communicating results almost immediately, would help in assessing the strategies of surveillance, prevention and containment of the emerging epidemic to the decision makers.
