A specialist in domestic labor affairs, Bassam Al-Shammari, revealed the next few days will see the resumption of the Kuwaiti-Ethiopian talks to complete the signing of the memorandum of understanding to regulate the recruitment of domestic workers from Addis Ababa.

Al-Shammari explained to Al-Jarida that this step will open a new door for the recruitment of domestic workers to fill the acute shortage that Kuwait is currently suffering from, pointing out that many local offices are waiting for the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the two sides.

Al-Shammari stressed the importance of allowing the recruitment of domestic workers from several countries, and not limiting the issue to only two or three countries, especially since allowing the recruitment of Ethiopian workers will create a kind of ‘balance’ in the market and help solve the problems of the shortage of domestic workers.

Al-Shammari said the opening of the door to recruit house help from Ethiopians will help lessen the burden from the shoulders of citizens and residents since the cost of hiring and salary of Ethiopians is much low compared to others. He has appealed to the concerned authorities to put at rest earlier differences that may have hindered the signing of the MoU.

He also called on the Public Authority for Manpower to hold binding training courses for its employees, office owners, and employers ‘online’ to familiarize them with how to deal with the employment issues, especially those related to labor disputes, to ensure that the rights of all parties are protected.
