The Ambassador of Guyana to Kuwait Dr. Shamir A. Ally lauded the relationship between Guyana and Kuwait as excellent, strong and cordial through a long history of wonderful diplomatic relations.

In a recent interview with Al Anba newspaper, the Ambassador highlighted the high-level mutual visits which reflect the depth of the bilateral relations, and to the existence of eight agreements that drive these relations between the two friendly countries. He explained that Kuwait is one of the main players in the region and is internationally known as the “peacemaker”.

He revealed that Kuwait is a small nation with a big heart, and its role is appreciated and praised by the international community. On the humanitarian level, Kuwait plays a unique role in offering relief to all those in need and alleviating the pain of the afflicted and affected in the conflict areas. He mentioned that Guyana is a country of unique investment opportunities and is waiting for Kuwaiti businessmen and investors.

The Guyanese envoy affirmed that Kuwait was a pioneer in the fight against the COVID-19 that introduced measures that were appropriate at that time, adding that the efforts of the medical staff is worth being praised. He revealed that his country recorded 209 confirmed cases of COVID-19 virus, including 78 active cases, 107 recovered cases and 12 deaths.

How do you describe Kuwaiti-Guyana relations and the most important stages of their growth and future prospects?

Our relationship with Kuwait has been characterized by strength and durability through a long history of brilliant diplomatic relations that began on August 17, 1995, and since then bilateral relations have developed continuously and remarkably because they are built on solid foundations of friendship, trust and mutual respect.

In general, our relationship with Kuwait is excellent and a promising future awaits it. Kuwait, with its potential, will find in Guyana a country of unique investment opportunities, Guyana is still waiting for Kuwaiti businessmen and investors, given its richness in natural resources and precious metals.

Tell us about the most prominent areas of bilateral cooperation between the two countries?

Consultations, financial aid, and grants are among the most prominent areas of bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Kuwaiti charitable and humanitarian work is the subject of praise and appreciation of the international community and Kuwait’s support is  visible in various parts of the world. We also have cooperation with the Kuwait Investment Authority, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and the Kuwaiti Zakat House.

How many agreements and memoranda of understanding have been signed that show the bilateral relations between the two friendly countries?

We have 8 agreements signed with Kuwait that lead bilateral relations between the two countries, bilateral consultations, joint committee for cooperation, culture and art, mutual protection for investment, trade, avoiding double taxation, air services and economic and technical cooperation, and we have a ninth agreement ready to be signed with the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs related to mutual exemption from entry visa to holders of diplomatic and private passports.

How do you evaluate the role that Kuwait plays in terms of conflict resolution and peace, as well as its global humanitarian role?

Kuwait is one of the main players in the region in terms of conflict resolution and peace, thanks to the wise leadership of His Highness. This role is appreciated and praised by the international community. Kuwait is known internationally as the peace-maker, as it is a small humanitarian nation with a big heart. As for the humanitarian role of Kuwait, you will find that Kuwait plays a unique role in providing relief to all in need and alleviating the pain of the afflicted and affected by conflict areas.

Tell us about the most important investment opportunities in Guyana?

Guyana is a country rich in natural resources and precious metals, which are still unexploited and undiscovered, and this in itself presents a promising opportunity for the Kuwaiti investor.

The government has endeavored to provide a suitable and safe environment for successful investments, specifically in the fields of oil, gas, gold, diamonds, bauxite, manganese, agriculture, and hotel construction. We will be happy to receive the Kuwaiti investor and provide him with all the facilities he needs. Ambassador Dr. Shamir A. Ally revealed the huge tourism potential that his country possesses and qualifies it to be a favorite tourist destination for Kuwaitis, and highlighted the cultural diversity that his country enjoys.

Ambassador also referred to a number of initiatives taken by the embassy out of social responsibility, such as the recycling initiative and waste reduction program launched by the embassy on August 1, 2018, in addition to the humanitarian project to oversee the evacuation of  Cameroonians from Kuwait in June 2 at the request of the Cameroonian ambassador in Riyadh.
