Kuwait advanced 6 positions in the Global Innovation Index, ranking 72 globally among 132 countries in the index this year, compared to 78th last year, while it ranked fifth in the Arab world, and remained fourth in the Gulf region for the second year in a row, Al-Rai reported.

Kuwait scored 29.9 points in the Global Innovation Index for 2021, compared to 28.4 in 2020, as the index is published annually by the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva in cooperation with INSEAD and Cornell University.

The reports accompanying the indicator this year in the new section on tracking global innovation rely on a selection of indicators, including the effects on research and development expenditures or access to innovation financing to gain perspective on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global innovation performance.

The index is based on 7 pillars in the classification of countries, which are the work of institutions, infrastructure, human capital and research, market development, business environment development, knowledge and technology outputs, and innovation outputs.

Concerning Kuwait’s ranking, Kuwait fell two places in the classification of the work of institutions within the innovation index this year, occupying 88th place globally compared to 86th in 2020. As for infrastructure, the country advanced 12 ranks at once from 55th to 43rd.

Kuwait’s ranking in terms of human capital and research fell from 61st place globally in the innovation index for the year 2020 to 69th in this year’s index, and the country’s ranking in market development fell 13 places, from 81 to 94 globally, while its rank also witnessed a decline in the evolution of the business environment from 98 to 100 globally. Kuwait’s ranking in terms of knowledge and technology outputs rose 13 ranks from 73rd to 60th globally, and the country advanced 8 places in innovation outputs, from 88th to 80th globally.
