With the cleanup of Jleeb al-Shuyoukh entering its second week, officials at Kuwait Municipality claimed at around 90 percent of illegal shops in the area have been closed down.

Besides the closure of shops, the municipality had also cut power supply to shops and building violating the law and used heavy equipment to tear down illegal structures erected all over the area, said the Deputy Director-General of the Municipal Affairs in Farwaniya and Mubarak Al-Kabir Governorates Ammar Al-Ammar.

Ms. Al-Ammar noted the Director General of Municipality and chairperson of the committee in charge of affairs in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, Engineer Ahmed Al-Manfouhi, had set a three-month period to change the face of Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh by 70 percent.

She explained that some of the violations included the opening of shops without a license, using unlicensed plots for various purposes, and infringements on state property. Director of the Department of Hygiene and Road Works Saad Al-Kharj added that the number of violations were huge and that so far 263 shops have been closed since the start of the campaign.
