INS Shardul, the Landing Ship Tank of the Southern Naval Command, which was earlier docked at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, a city on the south-west coast of India, arrived in Kuwait to take emergency medical supplies to India. This is part of efforts by the Kuwait government to assist India in combating the coronavirus spread in the country by providing much needed medical supplies. Gratitude was extended to the authorities in Kuwait for the requisite support, and to the Kuwait Red Crescent Society and the Indian Community for all their assistance.
The amphibious ship is built to carry tanks, trucks and troops. Several Indian naval ships are currently deployed as part of the initiative to transport oxygen cylinders and other medical supplies from countries.
INS Shardul was once used to transport Indians stranded overseas who requested to be repatriated in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic as they were unable to make their way home and enduring difficult circumstances.
