Indian Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan, who is on a two-day official visit to Kuwait, met with Indian community members at a reception hosted in his honor by the Embassy of India.

The reception, which was held at the Millenium Hotel in Salmiya on Saturday, was attended by a large crowd of Indians eager to hear from the minister, and to present petitions on their plight and memorandums on their grievances to him.

Addressing the crowd the minister said that the community members were the “real ambassadors of India” in Kuwait and urged them to promote the existing good bilateral relations. He also invited everyone to join the government’s ambitious efforts to transform India into a US$5 trillion economy.

On the issue of Indian domestic helpers stranded in Kuwait, the minister said he had earlier visited the shelter run by the Indian Embassy and met with around 52 Indian domestic helpers who were waiting to be repatriated back home. Pointing out that the women had been cheated by unscrupulous recruitment agents in India, Minister Muraleedharan said the government was working on revamping the immigration rules so as to prevent this type of cheating of innocent people.

He also promised that in his upcoming discussions with Kuwait authorities he would take up several issues including that of accreditation of Indian engineering certificates, and the finalizing of an agreement on the recruitment of Indian nurses only through authorized government agencies.
