Embassy of India, Kuwait organized an India Environment Week from 5-9 June to celebrate India’s contribution to Climate Action and generate awareness on climate change which is one of the most crucial issues that the world faces today.

Ambassador of India to Kuwait, His Excellency Sibi George while delivering his remarks highlighted the Government of India’s commitment to combating climate change through its various programs and schemes, including National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC), National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change to support the areas that are vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change etc.

 

He underlined the significant progress made by India in its efforts to save the planet. He said that it is a matter of pride for India that the country’s forest cover, population of lions, tigers, leopards, elephants, rhinos etc. are increasing. India’s commitment to reach 40 percent of installed electric capacity from non-fossil fuel based sources has been achieved, 9 years ahead of schedule.

India has ensured a reduction of almost 40 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and has achieved 10 percent ethanol blending in petrol, five months ahead of target. Ambassador George also mentioned about the ‘Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE), a global initiative launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister of India on World Environment Day (5 June) this year and said that the idea promotes an environment conscious lifestyle that focuses on ‘mindful and deliberate utilization’ instead of ‘mindless and destructive consumption’.

 

During the India Environment Week, Indian Embassy in Kuwait organized a series of activities, which started on 5 June with a symbolic Tree Plantation ceremony by planting a mango sapling at India House.

On the occasion, the mission highlighted the rich flora and fauna of India, and shared information on the geographical and ecological attributes of India. Daily online quizzes, painting and drawing competitions and presentations on India’s successful climate action were also conducted during the week.

An exhibition on Indian medicinal plants was inaugurated by the Indian Ambassador and attended by several resident ambassadors present at the celebrations. During the event, the speech of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India at the launch of LiFE movement was also shown to the audience.

 

Ambassador also felicitated the winners of the painting and drawing competitions and the daily online quiz programs. The event concluded with a cultural performance by Anjali School of Dance, which included Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Kavadi Chindu, semi-classical and others.

The event was attended by several resident ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps stationed in Kuwait, along with media personnel and members of the Indian community. The event witnessed enthusiastic response of people from different walks of life in Kuwait who participated virtually or in person.
