The Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said Sunday that COVID-19 outbreak has claimed 824 lives while the number of infections surged to 26,496.

In a report, the ministry said that there were 49 fresh deaths and 1,990 positive cases in the last 24 hours taking the total number of deaths to 824 and 26,496 positive cases.

There was a decrease in the number of deaths as one day cases went down to 49 from the earlier figure of 57, while the number of infections saw a jump from 1,429 one day earlier to 1,990.

Out of the total infected cases, 5,804 people were discharged from hospitals after recovery, the ministry further noted.

The authorities imposed few weeks back a nation-wide lock-down, slapping curfew-like restrictions, closing schools, educational institutions and universities and banning religious festivals and huge gatherings.
