Indian authorities said on Wednesday that there was a sharp jump in the number of COVID-19 deaths as 2,003 patients succumbed in one day while the number of positive cases in the last 24 hours rose by 10,974.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in its latest update that total number of positive cases rose to 354,065 and the death toll due to the pandemic so far soared to 11,903.
In the wake of the sharp increase in the positive cases and deaths, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to discuss the matter today with the chief ministers of Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and other states where COVID-19 cases and resultant deaths were unusually high.
The Indian government had decided to extend the lockdown in containment zones while giving key relaxations in the less affected areas.
However, many state governments are unwilling to extend the lockdown as it has already made the normal life and economic activities in jeopardy.
