Indian health authorities said on Monday that the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has claimed 206 lives in the last 24 hours as one-day positive cases rose to 9,983.
The death toll so far jumped to 7,135, while the total number of positive cases went up to 256,611, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in its morning update.
So far, a total of 124,095 people recovered from the pandemic and there are currently 125,381 active cases, the ministry said.
Maharashtra, New Delhi, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu are the worst hit Indian states as the deadly virus spread to 35 states.
The Indian government announced its decision to extend the lockdown in containment zones while giving key relaxations in the less affected areas.
