Member of Environment Affairs Committee at Municipality Council Abdul Salam AlRandi expressed dismay at social media pictures that show garbage is strewn all over areas in Kuwait, which paint a negative image of Kuwait to the outside world, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
The unbearable sight has called for examining the cleaning contracts the Municipality has signed with cleaning companies to ensure that the garbage is removed and if necessary, to look into the terms and conditions of the contract, which must be amended if necessary concerning the number of cleaning workers, the type of vehicles used for garbage collection, the quantity of garbage containers, the locations where they should be placed and ensuring the areas is kept clean 24/7.
The aim of this endeavor is to support better public services. Anyone judging the cleanliness of Kuwait will form the opinion that the country has not improved much in the past 40 years in spite of the cleaning contracts being signed for a very high price. The value of contracts signed with the companies must meet international standards. The Kuwait Municipality must ensure all terms of the contracts are adhered to in word and spirit and the rules and regulations must apply to everyone with violators punished for their contribution to environmental pollution, particularly damaging the marine environment. خ
Randi told the daily, the laws and punishment alone is not enough unless applied strictly to ensure awareness for protection of the environment. He added the sewage water which seeps into the seawater not only damages the environment and ruins marine life, but pollutes drinking water and is the cause of many diseases.
Highlighting that the cause of pollution is due to the lack on monitoring body, Randi stressed that the government and the concerned agencies must take serious note and get rid of such phenomenon.
