The India Islamic Cultural Centre (IICC), an iconic landmark in New Delhi, has announced the setting up of an annual “Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah Lecture on International Diplomacy” to commemorate the memory of the late Amir of Kuwait, for his overwhelming contribution in the field of diplomacy, as the world longest-serving foreign minister.

The IICC President Sirajuddin Qureshi said that a committee had been constituted to design the structure and modalities of the event, which is primarily aimed at perpetuating the memory of the late Amir for posterity.

Pointing to the coincidence in 2006 of the late Amir arriving in India just a few days after the IICC was formally inaugurated, Mr. Qureshi said.  “Back then, we could not get an opportunity to host a function in his honor because of His Highness’ tight schedule.”

In a resolution, the India Islamic Cultural Centre said it expresses its deepest condolence and profound grief at the passing away of the late Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, adding  “His death has left a great void in the embattled world, as he was a great champion of global peace and stability.”

The resolution, which was formally handed over to Kuwait’s Ambassador to India H.E. Jassem Al Najem, noted that during his long distinguished and chequered career, the late Amir played a stellar role in reducing tension and promoting dialogue in his quest to usher peace.  He was a front rank leader and statesman of the world whose voice was heard and advice followed.

“It is a matter of great pride for us that the late Amir decided to visit India as his first official international destination after becoming the ruler of Kuwait, signifying the importance Kuwait attached to its centuries old relationship with India.  His six-day visit in June 2006 not only strengthened the ties between India and Kuwait but redefined the road map for further expansion and growth.”

The resolution further added that India had lost a great friend and well-wisher in the late Amir, during whose reign Kuwait has become home to a large number of Indians, who not only form the largest expat population in Kuwait but are also respected and treated as partners in the progress of the country. It is because of the great leadership provided by Sheikh Sabah that India and Kuwait have jointly worked on many international issues

The India Islamic Cultural Centre places on record the grand legacy that the late Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah left behind and which will continue to guide and embolden efforts to make the world a safe and stable place to live in.   His imprint  and emphasis on de-escalating tensions across the board through dialogue and diplomacy  will always be a guiding factor, the Centre said in its resolution

“We pay our greatest tribute to Sheikh Sabah, a symbol of international diplomacy, peace and world stability.”
