Indian Community Support Group (ISCG) distributed food ration provisions last week to several individuals who have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic in Kuwait. Some committee members handed over the provision kits as part of the distribution drive all over Kuwait, while necessary protocols were followed such as wearing protective gear and also social distancing.

Mr K Singh Lamba, committee member of ICSG member, kicked of the distribution at the Indian Community School, Salmiya by handing over several provision kits to the needy who were invited to receive them at the school premises.

Dr. Surendra Nayak, committee member of ICSG also gave a detailed briefing to the attendees on the precautions to take to avoid the spread of the coronavirus. ICSG is also providing medical relief to members of the community through Indian Doctors Forum volunteers.

ICSG was formed under the guidance of the Indian embassy to coordinate and organise relief efforts for the Indian community and help the distressed. They have been providing ration provisions as part of the relief efforts. More than 40 Indian associations and hundreds of volunteers have been involved in coordination efforts including contributing in the welfare activities

Tens of thousands have been affected as a result of loss of jobs and income during the lockdown. While marginal workers are the most affected, the impact is felt on all sections of the community.  As the lockdown enters its third month the number of jobless people have increased and several thousands who were on a hand-to-mouth existence are deeply suffering  There is also widespread fear and crowding in places as a result of hunger.

ICSG food ration kits are basically giving bachelors and families uncooked food which includes rice, wheat flour, oil, pulses, milk powder, biscuits and spices meant to last for one month, so as to bring some relief to their predicament.

Mr Suresh P, the chief coordinator for distribution of the ration kits is overseeing the activities of various volunteers. The task on hand is quite challenging given that their movement is restricted and limited. An app to register www.icsg.org has been set up so as to respond faster to requests and avoid duplication as well.

So far 2000 ration kits comprising almost 50,000 meals have been distributed with another 4000 (100,000 meals) ready for distribution in the coming weeks. There has been a slow down due to the present curfew imposed all over the country, but the committee is optimistic that they will be in a position to distribute by next week as the number of requests for food ration kits has seen a big increase.

Other committee members present at the distribution were Mr Rajpal Tyagi, Mr Jatinder Suri and Mr Reaven D’Souza in addition to volunteers and coordinators from other areas of Kuwait.

ICSG calls upon needy people to go online and register their requirement on the dedicated website http://icsgkuwait.org/. This scheme is open to all needy Indians living in Kuwait.
