The Kuwaiti Federation of Fishermen expressed deep concern over the government committee’s decision to remove fishing trawlers from the Naqat Al-Shamlan.

This decision was taken despite the existence of a prior resolution by the Services Committee in the Council of Ministers, which intended to retain fishing vessels in the Naqat until an appropriate alternative was provided. However, the Federation has condemned this action, considering it a direct assault on the local fishing industry, reports Al-Jarida daily.

In a statement, the Federation described the situation as nothing short of a catastrophe, as the fishermen’s village was dismantled to make way for a different project.

The government had made promises to establish an alternative village more than 23 years ago, but unfortunately, this promise remains unfulfilled.

Instead, the authorities have now taken away the only place where fishing boats and vessels could be stationed, without making any alternative arrangements.

The Federation appealed to His Highness the Prime Minister for support, urging him to intervene on behalf of the fishermen.

They called for an end to hasty decisions made without thorough consideration. The Federation also highlighted that a similar situation occurred in the past, which was stopped by the Services Committee in the Council of Ministers. Back then, the Kuwait Municipality was tasked with providing an alternative within three years, but until now, no such alternative has been offered.

The Federation expressed disappointment in certain parties that seem to intentionally undermine the fishermen’s livelihoods and happiness during the fishing seasons. Instead of a celebration and joyous occasion with the return of shrimp fishing after a six-month hiatus, the fishermen face numerous challenges and obstacles. This situation greatly affects their morale and livelihoods.

Overall, the Federation implored the government to reconsider its decision and to prioritize the well-being of the fishermen and the fishing industry as a whole. They hoped that urgent action would be taken to rectify the situation and provide a suitable alternative for the fishing community in Naqat Al-Shamlan.
