A 16-year-old girl died on Saturday after being mauled by a shark in a river in Perth, the capital of Western Australia state.

Police said they were called to the scene of the attack on Saturday at around 0745 GMT near a traffic bridge in the Swan River in the Port Fremantle area of Perth, reports Al-Rai daily quoting Reuters.

Police added in a statement that the girl was pulled out of the water with serious injuries and died at the scene.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported today, Sunday, that the victim jumped from a jet ski to swim with a group of dolphins in the river when the shark attack occurred.

The last fatal shark attack in Western Australian waters occurred in November 2021 when a 57-year-old man was killed by a great white shark at Port Beach in Perth.
