Accumulation of garbage in private and residential housing areas is no longer happening and the entire process is now regularly monitored and under control, said Municipality Chairman Masoud Al-Mutair.

He added that except for a few commercial areas in Hawally Governorate, where the old cleaning companies had abruptly terminated their services, the rest of the country was being serviced by new cleaning companies under the revised contract.

The municipal chairman also revealed that action had been taken against the erring old cleaning companies that failed to comply with their contract terms, by cutting 10 percent from the bank guarantees provided by them, or delisting the companies from participating in any future contracts.

He pointed out that the new cleaning companies had begun their services and within two months it is expected that the entire garbage containers in the country would be replaced. He noted that some old cleaning companies had started selling their equipment and transferring their workers to the new companies.

In response to criticism that appeared earlier in some media, about garbage piling up in Kuwait, the municipality has made clear that while it has been exerting all efforts to maintain cleanliness in the country, some people were making the task more difficult by indulging in littering. He pointed to some areas with large Asian population where people often do not dispose of their domestic waste in a proper manner and as a result it scatters all over the place when being collected by garbage trucks.

The municipality added that it was conducting an awareness campaign under the title, ‘Keep it Clean’ that aimed to spreading awareness and educating the public about the importance of preserving cleanliness and maintaining a high level of public hygiene.
