The French ministry of foreign affairs and defense announced on Saturday a moratorium on the export of any military equipment to Turkey that could be used in the Turkish offensive on Kurdish areas in northeast Syria. The moratorium takes immediate effect, said a joint statement by both ministries, noting that the Turkish military operation poses a threat to the European security.

The European Union foreign ministers meeting, due in Luxemburg on Monday, will be an opportunity for coordinating a common European stance in this regard, the statement added. It reiterated the call issued two days ago by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian for the Global Coalition against the so-called Islamic State to convene an urgent meeting on Turkey’s operation Peace Spring.
