“Necessity is the mother of invention,” this is what 4 female engineers have proved in their graduation project at the College of Engineering and Petroleum, specializing in computer engineering, to come up with a project that resembles a solution to the transportation crisis on campus through what they called the “university scooter” or ku scooter.

The four — Retaj Al-Shammari, Zahia Al-Shamri, Rawan Al-Otaibi and Hadeel Al-Shamri, study at Al-Shaddadiya and they had presented the project at the Engineering Design Exhibition about two months ago, without anyone adopting it but is has provoked wide reactions among students and others on social media networks.

The project appears to be the result of a crisis experienced by students, moving between car parks and colleges, or even from one college to another, whether due to traffic congestion or the distance of facilities from each other as a result of the expansion of the campus, so the idea of the scooter came in the form of a project for the graduation of female students, and an innovative solution also for their colleagues at the university, through an application that allows them to use “scooters” available at various stations on the university campus, to move around.

The idea of the project is to provide a number of “scooters” on the university campus, equipped with a device that automatically connects to an application used by students and campus affiliates, through which one of them can know the availability of scooters near his geographical location, so he/she can reserve one of them by scanning or writing a barcode, and completes the journey once he reaches his destination through the application itself.

One of the advantages of the scooter, according to the owners of the project, is that it is possible to locate the scooters on the university campus, in addition to the fact that it is not possible to use it outside the campus, because it is linked to a specific path as soon as it leaves it until the user is alerted, and given five minutes to return inside the campus, and if not, it is done. The scooter stops automatically, and it will not work again unless it returns to the lane.

The scooter has the feature of sensing objects near it by alerting the user, in order to ensure the safety of users.

The project did not overlook the need for visitors and campus guests to move, as the application allows the feature to be used by them via the civil ID number.

According to the engineers, the scooters are used outside the buildings to move between them, especially between the buildings of the North and South Shaddadiya faculties.

The students created a website for security, which provides information about all the scooters used, their locations, identifies persons who use them, where and when, in order to ensure safe use.
