Fish markets in Kuwait are brimming with different varieties of fish, said the chief of the Kuwait Fishermen Union Thaher Al-Suwayyan.

Reports point out that the availability of large quantities of fish, including shrimp and local mullet, as well as the fall in demand following the end of Eid festival, has lowered prices significantly in the market.

According to the union chief, large number of mullet and shrimp baskets were available in the market and that in the coming days prices could fall further. It will be recalled that during the start of the Eid holidays a basket of Um Naira, a local variety of large shrimp, was being sold for KD55, while Shahamia, a medium-sized variety of local shrimp cost up to KD30, and local mullet was being sold for more than KD25 for a 25kg basket.

A recent visit to the fish market in Souk Sharq revealed over 800 baskets of Um Naira, and over 250 baskets of Shahamia, awaiting buyers.
