The European Union on Tuesday praised women empowerment in Kuwait after the recent appointment of women judges in the country. “Last week’s appointment of eight women judges is a very positive development,” EU lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, Peter Stano, told the Kuwait news agency, KUNA.

“Their appointment represents an important contribution to women empowerment in Kuwait and also sets a positive example for other countries in the Gulf”, he said. Stano noted that women’s rights and women empowerment are among the key issues the EU has been recently engaging on with Kuwait, including in the context of the first EU-Kuwait informal Human Rights dialogue held on 4 February 2020 in Brussels. As a follow-up to this meeting, a first ever event co-hosted and sponsored by the EU was organized in Kuwait City in cooperation with Kuwaiti authorities on “Strengthening women’s political participation” in mid-July, he added.
