Environmental issues of misdemeanors and felonies recorded a big jump during the year 2021, with their triple doubling from 571 to 1760 in misdemeanors, and doubling twice from 17 to 35 in felonies.

The environmental cases (misdemeanors and felonies) registered by the Environmental Police Department during the past five years showed a record increase last year — 1,760 for misdemeanors compared to 571 in 2020, 537 in 2019, and 264 in 2018, and 366 in 2017. As for criminal cases, 35 were recorded last year, compared to 17 in 2020, 27 in 2019, 10 in 2018, and 34 in 2017.

Security sources told Al-Rai that the Environmental Police Department is exerting great efforts to deter recklessness and keep in check environmental law violations on land and at sea, by posting securitymen in various locations in the country, which contributed to monitoring and controlling many environmental violations — felonies and misdemeanors.

The sources confirmed the violators in felony cases face imprisonment for a period of 3 years and more, or fines exceeding 3,000 dinars, while those accused in misdemeanor cases face imprisonment for periods of less than 3 years or a fine of less than 3,000 dinars.

The sources stressed that the Environment Police, affiliated with the Ministry of the Interior, in cooperation with the concerned authorities, monitors and receives all reports, and cooperates with each of them in strict confidence to control and issue citations against anyone trying to harm the environment, stressing that in this regard there is zero tolerance.
