The United States Embassy in Kuwait has announced openings for Kuwaitis to teach Arabic at an American university through the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program.

The embassy said in a statement that it accepts applications until September 1, 2022, as the program dates are set for August 2023 – to June 2024, reports a local Arabic daily.

The FLTA program is a nine-month, non-degree program for early-career English language teachers or recent graduates in journalism and media, English literature or American studies.

The source added, “The program is fully funded by the US State Department and provides the opportunity for participants to teach Arabic to students at a US university as a teaching assistant for one academic year. Participants in this program are able to hone their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency, and broaden their knowledge of US society and culture.”

The statement pointed out that the program also helps the participants in strengthening the teaching of the Arabic language in American colleges and universities. English language proficiency is mandatory, demonstrated with a minimum score of 79-80 on the TOEFL IBT or 6.0 on the IELTS.

The statement stated that the program allows ideal candidates for the program to meet people and become part of the host community by participating in community events and campus activities.

The embassy clarified that the registration within the program, the complete application package includes the following — Online application through https://apply.iie.org/FLTA2023; Original transcript with certified English translations, Graduation certificate, three letters of reference, TOEFL score report or IELTS. The costs of taking the TOEFL IBT test for shortlisted candidates will be covered by the US Embassy.
