The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has claimed 1,007 lives so far in India with the number of infections rising to 31,332.

Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said Wednesday there were 72 fresh deaths and 1,897 more cases in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 1,007 and overall cases to 31,332.

There was an increase in the number of one day deaths as it went up to 72 from the earlier figure of 62 and the number of infection also saw an increase from 1,543 one day earlier to 1897.

Out of the total infections, 7,696 people were discharged from hospitals after they recovered, the authorities said.

Maharashtra remains the worst affected Indian state as the death toll climbed to 400 while there are 9,318 infections followed by Gujarat with 181 deaths and 3,744 cases as the pandemic affected 32 Indian states.

The authorities imposed a few weeks back a nation-wide lock-down slapping curfew-like restrictions, closing down schools, educational institutions and universities and banning religious festivals and huge gatherings.
