In addition to the coronavirus scare that has put a wet blanket on gatherings and festivities to celebrate the National and Liberation Days, there is a general apathy to the sales and promotions that are held during the month-long Hala February festival.
Small shopkeepers, as well as major retail outlets, hotels and travel agencies have all complained of weak sales and bookings during this year’s Hala celebrations compared to previous years. It appears citizens and residents have curbed their spending this year on goods or reservations at hotels and travel agencies, as well as at cultural venues and entertainment centers.
On the other hand, not many retail outlets, hotels or airlines are offering exceptional discounts or attractive promotions to lure customers during the month-long festival. Many retailers say this is because prevailing economic and commercial slowdown has forced them to offer discounts throughout the year and they cannot afford to offer extra special discounts during Hala February.
Moreover, the number of exciting and entertaining activities that the public can participate in have dwindled this year, including musical performances, stage shows, exhibitions or large marketing and shopping events.
For those able to afford spending, many choose to go abroad to neighboring Arab countries to enjoy the entertainment there, during the extended holidays to mark National and Liberation Days, despite the coronavirus scare.
