The Competition Protection Authority has launched an investigation into suspected anti-competitive practices in fish market auctions, after growing complaints about the record high prices.

Informed sources told a local Arabic daily that “the supervisory move of the officials of the agency in this regard aims to ascertain whether there are any collective agreements among fishmongers to sell at a unified price, in violation of the provisions of the Competition Protection Law, or if there are other reasons for the rise in prices.”

The sources said “a team comprising members with the status of a judicial police force was assigned to monitor any violations and take legal measures against them.”

The sources pointed out that the members have been notified that the agency is conducting the studies and research necessary to analyze the various methods of dealing in the markets to detect cases harmful to competition and monopolistic practices, including studying the state of competition in the fish auction market sector, and requesting that it be provided with documents and data that were monitored by the authorities.
