President of India Droupadi Murmu has said “providing clean drinking water to the growing population will be a big challenge in the coming years. The issue of water is multifaceted and complex, for which efforts are required by all”.

Inaugurating the 7th edition of India Water Week (IWW) today at the India Expo Centre in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh President Murmu said in view of the increase in population and urbanization the issue needs larger attention.

Pointing to initiatives like Jal Jeevan Mission in 2019, with the mission of “har ghar me nal se jal” i.e, making water accessible at every house, President Murmu said during the launch of Jal Jeevan Mission, only 3.23 crore rural households had tap water supply in the country. ‘Now 10.43 crore households are getting tap water supply,”.

With this mission, the people of the village are getting clean drinking water, which has led to a significant reduction in water-borne diseases, the President added

The President also talked about Krishi Sichayi Yojana which was launched in 2015, it is an initiative based on facilitating irrigation to the farmers. She also urged people to conserve water and be a part of this movement.

“I would appeal to the common people, farmers, industrialists and especially children to make water conservation a part of their ethics, because only by doing this, we will be able to give a better and safer tomorrow to the coming generations”, she said.

The Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India is organizing the 7th edition of India Water Week (IWW) from 1st to 5th November with the motive to raise awareness, conserve and use water resources in an integrated manner.

The theme of the 7th edition of India Water Week is “Water Security for Sustainable Development and Equity”. Denmark, Singapore and Finland are the partner countries for IWW 2022.

Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has declared the vision of ensuring 100% water availability across India by 2024.

The five-day long programme is set to bring together experts, planners and stakeholders from across the globe. The focus is to build dialogue, action plan and addressing issues for sustainability of water resources development as well. In addition, it also aims for a management system in accordance with sustainable development goals. Therefore, the theme “Water Security for Sustainable Development and Equity”.

Regulating over-extraction of groundwater, tracking water resources in rural-urban areas, access to installing wells, pumps etc for irrigation, protection of aquifers, rainwater harvesting structures like check dams and field bunds, not polluting water resources are some of the ways by which water management and its sustainability can be achieved. Moreover, the use of new technologies, sensors and satellite imagery are enabling us to improve ‘water accounting’ and equitability in water management.

The Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Ministers of State for Jal Shakti, Prahlad Singh Patel and Bishweswar Tudu also marked their presence at IWW-2022.

The IWW- 2022 is being organized with a multi-disciplinary conference and a concurrently running exhibition enriching the theme and showcasing the technologies and solutions available for the areas under deliberation of the conference.

A multi- disciplinary dialogue in the form of a conference discussing the theme of “Water Security for Sustainable development and Equity” is one of the major components of the event.

The event has four Technical Sessions including 10 seminars, 10 panels discussions, Events organized by the Ministry of Jal Shakti and divisions like CWC, NMCG, NRCD, NWM and many more. Several other events will be organized by Young Professionals, World Bank, School Children, ICID, IWRS, NGOs etc. who are working continuously in direction of conservation and management of this precious natural resource. Also, a special side event is to be organized by Denmark.
