The Environment Public Authority discovered a new method of stealing public funds, this time by stealing sand – taking sand without license or government approval.

The Environmental Inspection and Control Department, headed by Nada Dabbashi, discovered the theft and took action against the concerned company by slapping a fine of 50,000 dinars and imprisonment for a period of not less than one year and not more than 3 years.

This is based on Article 46 of the Environmental Protection Law, which prohibits the establishment, expansion, development, merging or division of any quarry into more than one project or making any change in it except under a license issued by the concerned authority.

It also states that licenses may not be granted to practice this activity except for companies qualified by the competent authorities. In all cases, the practitioners of this activity are obligated to rehabilitate the sites after the end of their work period, in accordance with the requirements specified by the EPA in this regard.
