Despite the official denial of any increase in the prices of basic commodities, no one is in the mood to swallow such remarks in the face on prices increases seen on a daily basis, the latest is the raise in poultry prices, which have clearly reflected on consumers.

Responsible sources told a local Arabic daily that the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has not given nod to any poultry company to raise its prices in cooperative societies or supermarkets, and that it is committed so far to the decision to fix prices, which is the same position maintained by the Federation of Cooperative Societies, and its director Abdulaziz Al-Sultan confirmed it during the meeting of the affiliated Economic Committee Council of Ministers yesterday.

The sources indicated that poultry companies faced the decision to fix prices by taking advantage of the margin set for prices, the markets said that the rise in chicken prices has become a concern among citizens, after its prices increased by 20 percent, amid expectations that it will rise more in the coming months.

Meanwhile, with the increase in the price of chicken in the markets, the market centers witnessed the supply of 1200 grams chicken which is not very popular among citizens who prefer to buy chickens of small sizes.

The sources indicated that poultry companies have officially asked Commerce Ministry officials to increase their prices on the pretext of the high cost of breeding and production by more than 40 percent of the previous cost, but the ministry has yet to give in to the request saying approval was given to raise prices by approximately 11% after long negotiations although breeders demanded a 30 percent.

The sources pointed out that the citizen will not bear the planned increase in supply, and that the ministry will raise the food subsidy allocation to the extent that covers the percentage of the new increase in full, noting that the application of the new prices for poultry in the supply began since the beginning of last April.
