As part of steps to enhance food security, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Affairs, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Public Authority for Industry, Mazen Al-Nahedh, has issued a decision to open additional import lines to enhance the strategic food stockpile.

A local Arabic daily said it is expected that countries and companies that were not previously included in the list of primary suppliers will be added to the list.

The daily has learned that Al-Nahedh has approved the Kuwaiti technical regulation for updating the validity of food products, allowing the unification of the validity periods of food products with the Gulf countries, and then the locally applied validity period for some major food commodities, especially frozen meat and poultry, will increase to 120 days instead of 90.

The sources stated that the decision is expected to allow imports from new countries and companies, opening new outlets from major food markets that were previously closed due to their long validity periods in accordance with Kuwaiti conditions, explaining that the decision will enhance the strategic stock of food commodities.
