A Kuwaiti woman filed a complaint with the Fintas Police Station against the caretaker of the building in her ownership in Mahboula for collecting the rent from its tenants amounting to KD4,355 dinars and failing to give her the money, Al-Anba daily reported.

The caretaker was summoned by police for the investigation where he denied swindling the building owner. He disclosed to police that three tenants have not been paying the rent since March due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, and that he had verbally notified the owner of the building but received no instructions.

He expressed his surprise that the owner has filed a case against him, even though he was just an employee and the tenants have been discussing rent-related issues with the owner of the building, regarding non-payment of rents as many are unable to meet rent demands having suffered during the coronavirus period

A large number of expatriates have requested landlords and caretakers to grant them a reprieve from paying rents for some months as they endured significant financial setbacks from layoffs, loss of income, and slashing salaries due to the coronavirus-preventative measures. Many expats believe there is the possibility for rent exemption, some on humanitarian grounds, while some landlords want to keep their apartments occupied, particularly as expats are departing in droves, leaving buildings vacant.
