The 76th Annual Cannes Film Festival begins Tuesday, May 16, and runs through Saturday, May 27, and, over the course of those 12 days, stars will descend on the French Riviera to support their projects with press conferences, photo-calls, and premieres. With those obligations come multiple opportunities to showcase all sorts of fashion. From relaxed daytime looks inspired by the Mediterranean coast of southeastern France to gowns reminiscent of old Hollywood, the possibilities to make red carpet history are endless. While 21 films go up against each other for the Palme d’Or (the festival’s highest honor, which, in recent years, was previously awarded to Triangle of SadnessTitane, and Parasite).

At the height of his high profile courtroom battles with his ex-wife Amber Heard, the future of Johnny Depp’s movie career appeared to be in jeopardy.

But three years after he was dropped from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, his big screen return as Louis XV in Jeanne du Barry opened the Cannes festival.

Depp speaks French in the movie which tells the story of the daughter of an impoverished seamstress who became the French King’s last official mistress.

The title character is played by Maïwenn, the mononymous French actress who has also written and directed the French-language movie.

After the movie premiered, a 7 minute standing ovation was received making Depp emotional.
